The website, British Pathe, is an archive of movie clips covering the period 1896 - 1976. In the days before television became universal in UK homes, cinemas always carried Pathe news films as part of their programmes - usually screened between the B and A films. This continued right into the mid 70s. The website has over 90,000 movie clips. Not surprisingly, many feature events in Brighton, including Madeira Drive. Have a look on the site, put in the search term 'Brighton' and you can watch clips covering reporting some of the earlier years of the famous events that still run annually to this day.
For example, what we now know as the Pioneer Veteran Motorcycle Run, was in 1923 termed the Midget Motorcyle run from London to Brighton AND back!
And here's the 1927 version of the Veteran Car Run, billed as the Old Crocks run - the 31st Anniversary of Motorists' Emancipation Day.
It's an amazing resource.
