In 2014 the Sand Sculpture Festival returned to Brighton at Black Rock with a theme of Around the World in Sand.  It had previously been in here in 2005 and 2006. Huge figurative sculptures are on display, made out of nothing but compressed sand - the right sort of sharp sand. The sand is mixed with water and then compressed into blocks of sand which is contained in wooden frames. The frames are then removed.

As you can see frrom the photos below, these sand sculptures are on a grand scale and well worth seeing up close.

There is also a cafe cabin and a sand play area where children can have a go themselves.

It is possible that the Festival will be here again -- but not in 2015.

You can reach Black Rock by car (there's parking right next to the Festival in Black Rock car park).or by bus along Marine Parade, the road above Madeira Drive, or by train, the Volk's Electric Railway along Madeira Drive.
